201st post!

Verisign got a spanking from ICANN for its' pagefinder service. They think they didn't do anything wrong. I think it's fairly clear they deserved it. It was a pretty bold power play aimed at the heart of the internet. Verisign is a for-profit company; why are they in control of the workings of a vital public resource? What gives them the right to profit from it? It was a pretty big lesson for me, because I had no idea that it was possible for anyone to do anything of that nature. Some are calling this event a result of engineers and business crossing paths, but I think that putting a money-hungry entity in charge of a public resource is like putting a fox in the henhouse. It makes about as much sense as deregulating electricity did in California did.
